Nope, nothing’s changed recently. Helvetica still looks pretty bad on Windows.

ESPN revamped their web site this week, providing a quick reminder to you web designers out there. The small Helvetica font that you like to bold and lighten still looks kinda bad on Windows XP browsers. I am not switching to Vista (which renders Helvetica better, but not great), and I know I should switch to a Mac but it is really not happening anytime soon.

There’s a few problems with Hell-vetica (like how I did that?), under roughly 20 pixels, on Windows. The anti-aliasing is not very even, and the letters don’t appear to space proportionally. Once you get past that, things start to look a bit peachier.

I thank you for your time.

  1. this have anything to do with whether the font is installed on the users machine? i have it installed and it looks kosher. hmmm, i wonder. hmmm. i really do.

  2. note: looking at it in FF 3 on Vista. As a follow up, that initial Ford/ESPN coop ad is pretty cool … roadblock? I think so.
