The more trust you have in the knowledge and skill of your teammates, the more instinctual it becomes to ask them for help before figuring it out yourself. I’m referring to the type of low-hanging fruit which 5 minutes of pounding the internet can usually solve. What ends up happening is those 5 minutes turn into 10 minutes as soon as that second person get’s roped in, plus whatever time it takes for that poor soul to get situated again once they’ve googled something for you. That’s more than doubling the cost of figuring something out.
My exercise (yes, I’m a violator) has become to ask myself a couple of questions before bugging the guys. Is the problem urgent enough to wake a sleeping bear? Is it completely beyond my domain to solve? If the answer is yes to both, then it’s going to take more than a few minutes to solve, so schedule a bit of time with that person. If the answer is a ‘no, but it’s easier’, then quit being a mind suck on everyone else and open a browser.
